Payback 2023: Match Card Breakdown, Bold Predictions, Spoilers, and Potential Returns

Stepping into the aftermath of SummerSlam, the stage is now set for WWE Payback, the first post-SummerSlam Pay-Per-View event. This dynamic lineup features a collection of matches that either couldn't materialize at SS or are the genesis of new storylines. While the absence of a Bloodline showdown might be notable, the Payback card remains undeniably robust. Let's delve into the intricacies of this event, dissecting each match with a keen eye for detail.

Becky Lynch v/s Trish Stratus (Steel Cage Match)

Kicking off the spotlight is a monumental clash between Becky and Trish in an electrifying Steel Cage Match. This enduring rivalry, spanning several months, appears poised to reach its climactic conclusion at Payback. Despite its promising start, the WWE Universe's reception of this feud has waned, with criticisms of repetitiveness and elongation. What initially ignited as a fiery showdown gradually lost its spark, inadvertently affecting the reputations of both Becky and Trish. Regrettably, the feud's trajectory has failed to captivate audiences, falling short of expectations. As we dissect the potential victor, the path seems straightforward. With Becky reigning as the cornerstone of WWE, and Trish likely embarking on her farewell stint, a triumphant outcome for Trish would defy logical coherence. It emerges as imperative for Becky to secure the victory, allowing her to pivot towards fresh narratives and challenges

WINNER - BECKY LYNCH

 Rey Mysterio v/s Austin Theory

Adding to the lineup is the United States Championship bout, featuring Rey Mysterio in the title defense against the prior US Champion, Austin Theory. This contest has seen its share of unexpected developments, including Santos initially slated as the challenger before Rey stepped in due to Santos's injury. After Rey clinched the championship, a rematch is now on the horizon. Anticipated to be a compelling showdown, it could, however, be somewhat overshadowed by the event's already formidable card. The competitive nature of Payback might shift focus away from this match, despite its potential appeal to fans.

Regarding the match outcome, the direction appears straightforward. WWE's decision to crown Rey Mysterio as the champion wouldn't likely be followed by a swift loss within weeks. Additionally, industry reports hint at Theory's potential future shift to a Baby-face persona, making a championship win less advantageous at this point. As a result, my prediction leans toward Rey Mysterio emerging victorious.

WINNER - REY MYSTERIO

Rhea Ripley v/s Raquel Rodriguez

Shifting our attention to the clash for the Women's World Championship, Rhea Ripley stands as the defending champion against Raquel Rodriguez. Candidly speaking, Rhea's title reign has left much to be desired, at least from my perspective. Despite reigning for over four months, she hasn't encountered a notably competitive match that could truly test her mettle. Raquel seems poised to offer that challenge, although the storyline itself has underwhelmed, to say the least. The lack of significant developments can be attributed to Rhea's heavy involvement in the Judgment Day narrative, seemingly overshadowing her title reign. Despite these factors, prevailing sentiments suggest Rhea will likely retain her title. The anticipation is that she will carry the championship into WrestleMania, even though it might not align with personal preferences.

WINNER - RHEA RIPLEY

LA Knight v/s The Miz

Next on the lineup is a match that is sure to elicit heightened anticipation from the crowd. Featuring the beloved crowd-favorite and megastar, LA Knight, pitted against one of the industry's most accomplished heels, The Miz. Personally, I'm excited about this match the most from the PLE.
This rivalry has been a masterclass in storytelling, encompassing fiery promo battles and intense brawls. The meticulous build-up has been a testament to WWE's dedication, making this match a potential standout. With all elements aligned, it could very well surpass the rest of the card.
Turning to the victor, the choice appears clear-cut. LA Knight finds himself in the midst of a monumental push, making him the logical and straightforward selection for the win. While The Miz has endured a series of losses recently, his legacy in WWE remains secure. This juncture provides an opportunity for him to contribute to talent elevation. Considering these factors, it's evident that both individuals stand to gain, making it a win-win situation overall.

WINNER - LA KNIGHT

Sami Zayn & Kevin Owens v/s Damain Priest & Finn Balor (Steel City Street Fight)

Stepping into the spotlight is a riveting clash that pits the reigning tag team champions, Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens, against the formidable duo hailing from Judgment Day, Damian Priest and Finn Balor. This rivalry has been brewing over a considerable span, often culminating in main-event showdowns on RAW. Now, the stakes have been raised, as this explosive match is officially set for WWE Payback, with the added intensity of the Stipulation of Street City Street Fight, where "Anything Goes" !

Delving into the match outcome, a compelling argument emerges for the current tag champions, Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens, to retain their titles. Having recently secured the championship at WrestleMania, their reign has yet to see ample opportunities for impactful defenses in PLEs. Given this context, it wouldn't be far-fetched to suggest that they will continue their tenure as tag team champions.

Furthermore, the escalating tensions and rivalry between Finn Balor and Damien Priest, coupled with the addition of JD McDonagh, could indeed inject heightened drama into the match. However, the underlying sentiment remains that Sami and KO have potential left to explore in their tag championship run, making their retention a likely prediction.

WINNER - SAMI ZAYN & KEVIN OWENS

Grayson Waller Effect with Cody Rhodes

Next up on the Card in the freshly announced Grayson Waller Effect with Cody Rhodes as the Guest.

Grayson Waller has garnered a substantial amount of recognition for his contributions since his ascent to the Main Roster. Notably, his engagements with prominent figures such as John Cena, Edge, and AJ Styles have significantly elevated his profile. Presently, WWE is aligning him with the 'American Nightmare' Cody Rhodes, a strategic maneuver to offer Cody a platform in the upcoming Payback event. Given Cody not having any opponent in the PLE, this decision ensures his presence in a segment, contributing valuable TV time to the Payback spectacle.

I also hold a personal prediction that this segment could potentially evolve into a match. The scenario might involve Waller engaging in taunts or jests directed at Cody, prompting Cody to issue a challenge on the spot. If the segment does turn into a match, the outcome appears rather straightforward. Cody Rhodes getting the win would be the definite outcome.

Seth Rollins v/s Shinsuke Nakamura

Turning our attention to the Main Event—an electrifying clash between Shinsuke Nakamura and Seth Rollins, contending for the World Heavyweight Championship.

Indeed, the main event emerges as perhaps the most enigmatic showdown of the evening. While the logical trajectory would lead towards a Clear Seth Rollins victory, the element of unpredictability looms large. A potential game-changer is the looming presence of Judgment Day, with Damian Priest holding the Money in the Bank briefcase. The imminent cash-in possibility adds a layer of complexity to the match, where Priest could seize the opportune moment to alter the outcome.

Another factor that amplifies the unpredictability of this main event is Seth Rollins' health concerns. Recently, Rollins candidly discussed his health issues on the Impaulsive podcast, and this topic was further addressed in a recent segment on Monday Night Raw. If his health condition worsen, it could potentially hinder his in-ring capabilities and prompt WWE to consider altering their plans for the title. This adds an intriguing layer of uncertainty to the match, as Rollins' health status could influence the timing and outcome of his championship reign.

Contemplating the outcome of this intricate contest, my inclination leans towards Seth Rollins retaining the title, despite the potential twists and turns that Judgment Day's involvement could bring. While it may appear tempting to assume a title change, WWE might be strategically biding their time for a more monumental moment to enact such a shift in the championship landscape. Therefore, my prediction stands on the premise that Seth Rollins will persevere and maintain his hold on the World Heavyweight Championship.

WINNER - SETH "FREAKIN" ROLLINS

Possible Returns at WWE Payback

Anticipating the night of Payback, the potential for substantial surprises in the 'Possible Returns' section appears relatively dim. While fans might be harboring expectations, the likelihood of notable comebacks during the Payback event seems rather limited.

Thus, My Prediction here would be that there will be "NO RETURNS" at the night of WWE Payback !
